Janelle is a singer, rapper and actress who set herself apart sartorially from the beginning of her career with her tuxedo wardrobe. Her albums have always had visual elements and afro-futurist stories spun through the music, specifically the plight of the Android, who Janelle sees as an Other in society. When Janelle came out publicly in Rolling Stone she exclaimed, "Being a queer black woman in America—someone who has been in relationships with both men and women—I consider myself to be a free-ass motherfucker."
