Jewelry Care

We hope you love your new jewelry! Here are some tips to keep it looking great.

  • To keep your jewelry safe, always put it on last when dressing, and after applying any skin or hair products (these can affect some metal finishes).

  • Always remove jewelry before undressing, sleeping, exercising, or going in the water.

  • Be careful with scarves or outerwear that can catch on jewelry, especially earrings. Always wear silicone backs on simple hook earrings to keep them in place (we have plenty if you need a pair!)

Sterling Silver Care:  Silver will oxidize or tarnish when exposed to sulfur in the air. To minimize tarnish, store in a ziplock bag with a desiccant pack or piece of chalk. To remove light tarnish, wash with water and white toothpaste, and dry with a soft towel. For heavier tarnish, use a metal polishing cloth such as Sunshine. Black oxidation is an intentional design element in many sterling silver pieces.

Brass Care:  Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc. It will tarnish or change color over time and by prolonged contact with the oils on our skin. After wear, remove any residue with a clean, soft cloth. Solid brass can be polished with a Sunshine cloth or other commercial brass cleaner. For some people, metals containing copper can react with the skin to leave a greenish mark, a harmless mineral deposit that washes away easily. Using clear nail polish to coat surfaces that touch the skin can minimize this effect.

Gold Plated Care: Gold plating is delicate and can wear away over time. Be sure to remove gold  plated jewelry before sleeping, exercising or going in the water. After wear, use a soft cloth to wipe away any residue from the skin. Never use any chemical polishing agents on plated metals.

Gold Filled Care: Gold filled, also called filled gold or rolled gold, is a manufactured "sandwich" of metals, and far more durable than gold plated. The outer 5% is a layer of solid 14k gold, usually on a base of brass. Gold filled jewelry needs minimal care, other than cleaning as needed.

Stainless Steel Care: Under normal conditions, stainless steel will not tarnish or change color. Other than keeping it clean and dry, no special care is needed. Polish shiny surfaces as needed with a clean, soft cloth.
