Pauli Murray (1910-1985)

• civil rights activist, scholar, theorist, lawyer, educator, writer, Episcopal priest

• author of States’ Laws on Race and Color, defined as the “bible” of the civil rights movement by Thurgood Marshall

• worked to expand legal protection for gender equality

• Murray did not fit the expectation of gender norms. She was known to self describe as he/she to family and friends, while using she/her in formal writings.
