Flaming Idols are altar candles featuring inspiring figures of the LGBTQ community, created and handmade by Philadelphia artist and activist Robin Markle.

When Gritty was introduced as a mascot for the Philadelphia Flyers hockey team his “monstrous” appearance was mocked in the media, but like many queer monsters before him, Gritty embraced himself and soon the public did too. He quickly became aligned with The Underdog, gender non-conformity and anti-fascism. A Philadelphia City Council Resolution in support of Gritty notes, “Gritty’s NHL debut, featuring a bottoms-up fall onto the ice, is a metaphor for the vulnerability that each of us face as we, too, skate onto the slippery ice that is life.”

You might light this candle and look to Gritty for inspiration and guidance in: Embracing your non-conformity, being vulnerable, fighting fascism.

Each unscented soy wax candle burns for approximately 10 hrs. Glass votives are 2.5" high and 2" wide at the base.
