I got here in a very roundabout way. First I started throwing pottery, then moved to silkscreening, which led to stationery and bookmaking, on to t-shirts and bags, then to sewing and woodworking.

I’ll be forever smitten with constructing things. I’ve been gravitating toward constructed objects like bags and wood objects because I’m happiest when I’m building and using tactile materials like wood, leather and denim.

My background is in architecture with a foray into furniture making. I’ve worked with a lot materials, so my instinct is to devise a way to combine them in a clean, modern way. With the exception of my printing, I never use just one material but, instead, try to combine textures, patterns, etc. that complement each other.

Sourcing materials is always really exciting. Whether it’s finding new fabrics or climbing through a lumber yard, I love finding a material and thinking about a way of making it what it wants to be.

My design studio and apartment are both located in Philadelphia’s Old City. I have lived in Philadelphia creating clothing and costumes since 1999.

I create and make everything myself, transforming soft and cozy materials into sexy, unique and versatile statement pieces. My signature design is the Chi-chek, which translates to “flower” in Turkish. I create the Chi-chek with my serger and apply it to the finished garment by hand.

Each Chi-chek is unique; while I may use the same materials, each garment has its own unique characteristics. The most enjoyable element of creating each Chi-chek is never knowing exactly what the finished product will look like until it is finished and in hand. Figuring out how it fits onto the garment perfectly is part of the fun.

Ashley is a newcomer to the craft show scene and it’s her first time participating in a VIX event. Welcome, Ashley!

INDICAN is a jewelry collection inspired by many diverse cultures including African, Indian, Native American, Mayan, Incan, Hmong just to name a few. Many natural elements are used such as wood, coral, bone, horn and stone to create unique, bold statement necklaces.

 Ashley has always had a love for large, bold, big, colorful, unique, eclectic jewelry.

Ashley Peel Pinkham was born in Memphis, TN and has lived in too many places to mention but currently resides in South Philadelphia.

 She received her BFA from the University of the Arts, Philadelphia, PA and works as Assistant Director at The Print Center in Philadelphia.

All materials, use of necessary tools and one-on-one instruction are included. Earwires are sterling silver.

The workshop will be held on Saturday, May 18, 1 pm at VIX Emporium, 5009 Baltimore Avenue, Philadelphia PA 19143. We will meet in the back room, or outside if the weather is lovely.

Thanks for a Great 30th Street Craft Market! Thanks to all who came out to last weekend’s 30th Street Craft Market!. Our very talented vendors had a great turnout, from both weekend travelers and local craft enthusiasts alike, despite the change in date. Our partners at the University City District, did their usual phenomenal job of promoting this special event, and the folks at Amtrak kept it all running smoothly — special thanks to them. All agreed that a craft show is a perfect use for this grand, historic space, just to the north of the main station concourse. We had a great time and hope to come back next year. In the meantime, we’re looking forward to another 30th Street Craft Market outside on The Porch, 30th Street Station’s newly constructed outdoor gathering space. Stay tuned for updates about when it will take place and how vendors can apply to show their work. ONE MORE DAY to Apply For GO WEST! Craft Fest The last day of February is the last day for vendors to apply for GO WEST! Craft Fest, returning April 20 to The Woodlands. We have already received over 100 applications for our Spring show and are looking forward to sorting through all of them. Don’t miss your chance to participate! Vendors must be the creators of their own wares – no vintage (except repurposed), imports, flea or mass market items are permitted. There is no fee to apply, so click here for the vendor application. We also have a great lineup of entertainment in addition to the local crafts. Live music will be provided by bluegrass band Sour Mash (more TBA). For the kids, we welcome back Jay Sand of All Around This World to the Fest as well as Baltimore Avenue’s Green Tambourine. We are also working on art & craft activities for kids to spark their young creativity. There will be random acts of juggling throughout the day, and last but not least, the tremendous Tinycircus by Tangle Movement Arts. There will also be FOOD by a variety of local eateries, including one exciting new establishment making their WORLD DEBUT at our show… Introducing Taco Angeleno! Taco Angeleno, coming soon to GO WEST! Craft Fest and Baltimore Avenue We are thrilled to welcome Taco Angeleno to Go West! Taco Angeleno is a new mobile tacqueria by our friend and neighbor, Vanessa Jerolmack. When Jerolmack (née Hernandez) came to live in West Philly, she missed the unique Mexican-American flavors that abounded in her native Los Angeles. In order to feel more at home, she would fill her kitchen with all the Mexican food she could cook. Drawing from her family’s recipes, she often altered traditional meals to be vegetarian in order to suit the diets of her friends and her husband. She now owns the empty lot behind her home that extends onto the main commercial corridor of Baltimore Avenue, a few steps away from VIX at 5019 Baltimore. When she’s not doing special events like Go West, she plans to open Taco Angeleno there in her mobile food trailer, once a pretzel vendor’s cart. Catering to the tastes of vegetarians and omnivores alike, it will feature take-out Mexican food similar to the food she grew up eating in the kitchens of her grandmothers and on the streets of L.A. Complete with large plants, bright flowers and the aroma of tacos cooking in the background, the intimate setting will feel like the quintessential Mexican backyard garden atop a hill in the Los Angeles Valley. We are hugely excited to host Taco Angeleno’s debut at Go West, and even more excited at the prospect of a new full-time taco spot on our block! Register for our next Terrarium Workshop! Terrariums are low-maintenance plant ecosystems under glass. Create your own little world with wild-gathered moss & other plants, water, soil and pretend inhabitants. Paint your own happy little residents that Beth makes out of clay, or choose from an assortment of other miniatures. Price includes instruction, plants & moss, some decorations and other necessary materials. Bring your own jar with a tight-fitting lid, no more than 6″ diameter. We will also have a few jars available for purchase at the workshop, as well as special discounts on handmade miniature glass animals in stock at VIX. For a sneak peek at some of the wondrous works and their makers, check out the vendor profiles we’ve been sharing over the past few weeks. Along with our partners at the University City District, we look forward to seeing you at 30th Street Craft Market’s debut. This venue for local art and craft is the newest of many successful public events and projects they bring to our part of town, like the Baltimore Avenue Dollar Stroll and University City Dining Days. This will be our third Fest at the Woodlands, a 54-acre green space that is home to a community garden, an 18th century neoclassical mansion (open for tours), an apiary, historically significant trees,and monuments to over 30 thousand deceased Philadelphians. Besides the wide array of local artisans purveying their handmade wares, enjoy live music, food by local eateries, juggling performances, children’s activities and acrobatic feats by West Philly’s own Tinycircus. If you are interested in vending at GO WEST!, here is the vendor application. Vendors must be the creators of their own wares – no vintage (except repurposed), imports, flea or mass market items are permitted. 30th Street Craft Market Rescheduled For Feb. 23 Unfortunately, the long-awaited 30th Street Craft Market, will have to be a little bit longer-awaited. Winter Storm Nemo is canceling much of the Amtrak service from here north and making it hazardous for many of our vendors and shoppers to travel to the show. In the interest of safety, the call has been made to reschedule the show to two weeks later, February 23rd, 11-5. It is unfortunate, but perhaps your Valentine won’t mind a belated gift, as long as it is a unique & handmade token from one of our talented local vendors. We hope to see you then!
