VIX picks August 2010

Is it a pillow or a stuffed toy? Yes and yes. We just received a new batch of these amazing animals by Alison Corrie. She silkscreens her original black and white drawings onto plain canvas, colors them sparingly with fabric paint and embroidery, backs them with traditional African printed textiles, and stuffs them with love and polyfill. There are rabbits, two different owls, elephants, whales, giraffes, even turtles, alligators and armadillos, all of which would be equally comfortable on a couch or in a child’s arms. Nora loves them!

Alison lives in Brooklyn, but there are very few degrees of separation between her and Philly. Her brother dates Jen McCleary, a local artist who combines digital photography, collage and found objects to create 2D art and unique jewelry. More of her vintage opticians lens necklaces also arrived today, coincidentally. She and Alison have done several collaborative projects that are definitely worth checking out. Thanks to both Alison and Jen for sharing their work with us – we love having it around!
